Discover why the Phoenix Cruiser is considered one of the best Class-B motorhomes made in America
Having your own personal space while traveling from coast to coast and sightseeing across the USA is one of the best things about RV camping. You can bring all of your essentials and comforts—if it fits in the rig, it can go! Your favorite dishes and cookware? Pack it! Your acoustic guitar? It’s taking a road trip! Inflatable bounce house for the kids? Sure, why not!
Being able to come and go as you please, wherever you please, is a huge advantage to owning a motorhome. Fortunately, the USA is rife with great American-based companies that can either build your dream rig or provide you with an option full of amenities. One of these options is the aptly-named Phoenix Cruiser.
Background and history of the Phoenix Cruiser
The manufacturer behind this innovative motorhome is Phoenix USA, a well-regarded conversion van manufacturer based in Elkhart, Indiana. We say “aptly-named” because the Great Recession nearly put Phoenix USA out of business. The company had to switch to direct-to-customer sales after its dealership network was wiped out.
Phoenix USA developed and introduced the first Phoenix Cruiser B+ motorhome in 1997.
Phoenix USA claims to have one of the highest customer satisfaction ratings in the RV industry by building a motorhome that’s bigger than the standard Class B rig but smaller than traditional Class C’s.
Why buy the Phoenix Cruiser?
The Phoenix Cruiser is often referred to as a “Class B Plus” motorhome, due to its higher level of luxury and slightly bigger size.
Class B motorhomes are usually on the small side, built on van chassis. Vehicles that qualify as a Class B motorhome have been around for nearly 100 years, but most RV experts point to the 1968 Xplorer as the first true Class B rig, which was built on a Dodge van chassis. Even though Volkswagen’s Kombi (also called Westfalia or Microbus) was building camper vans at this time, they are generally considered to be a camper van due to their lack of amenities and not a true Class B.
Phoenix USA markets the Phoenix Cruiser as a Class B+ that can be both comfortable inside due to lavish interior touches and outside in smaller, tighter campsites throughout America.
The Cruiser is feature-rich, well-made and affordable. Usually, you can only hope for 2 out of those 3, but with the American-made Phoenix Cruiser, all 3 are applicable.
The Phoenix Cruiser has a practical and thoughtful floorplan that most people fall in love with immediately, undoubtedly due to the fact that the company was founded by road trip enthusiasts with a passion for camping.
Hitting the road and visiting National Parks and campgrounds all across America is the dream of many, and spacious travel vehicles like the Phoenix Cruiser can make that adventure easier and more enjoyable. The Cruiser is a wonderfully-sized rig to take into those hard-to-park spots at National Parks and offers generous accommodations for up to 4 sleepers via a full-size bed and power sofa.
Phoenix Cruiser features and specs
The latest Phoenix Cruiser lineup is offered in 7 different lengths with 10 different floor plans. Every variation comes with at least 1 slide-out, usually for the dinette, but some floor plans have up to 3 slideouts.
Phoenix Cruisers range in length, from just under 22-feet to just under 31 feet. They are 10 feet tall, counting the air-conditioning units housed on the roof. Each unit appears capable of towing up to 8,500 lbs when properly equipped.
All variations of the Phoenix Cruiser prior to 2016 are built on the Ford E-450 chassis with a 6.8 liter V-10 gasoline engine, or the 7.3 liter V8 post-2016. The V-10 comes standard with a 5-speed automatic, while the V8 gets a slightly more efficient 6-speed auto. Fuel capacity is 55 gallons. Dual rear wheels and disc-brakes with ABS are standard.
Every Phoenix Cruiser comes standard with:
- 6-gallon hot water heater
- Indoor and outdoor shower
- Large refrigerator plus freezer
- 2-burner stove, microwave
- Fully automatic leveling jacks
- Back-up monitor
- Electric awning
- Four decor choices (Toast, Graystone, Desert Sand and Nightscape)
Optional equipment includes 4-wheel-drive, solar panels, Onan generator, electric step, class-III trailer hitch and heated remote mirrors with side view cameras.
Each Cruiser has a freshwater tank ranging in size from 31 gallons to 46 gallons, a grey water tank of 23 gallons and wastewater capacity of 35 gallons.
Also, every rig comes with a 36,000/3-year chassis warranty, as well as a 60,000/5-year powertrain warranty. The RV aspect of the rig has a 1-year/unlimited mile warranty. And just so you don’t have to worry about the ceiling leaking much, each unit is built with a one-piece fiberglass roof.
All windows in the rig are built with insulated glass to help keep the interior warm in winter and cool in summer. The sidewalls, roof and floor are made of vacu-bonded laminated pieces, with heavy-duty corrugated plastic and fiberglass laminated to the underside of the floor.
Interior height for all models is measured at 6-feet 4-inches. All roof vents and skylights are tubular aluminum-framed and each rig comes with a Fan-Tastic Vent.
Two TVs are included with the standard motorhome—a 32” LED in the front and a 19” LED with Bluray player in the bedroom. All wiring in the rig is done by hand, with continuous wire runs.

Other conversion vans from Phoenix USA
If you’re still searching for the perfect RV and aren’t sure if the Cruiser is it, consider Phoenix USA’s new Phoenix TRX. The TRX is designed to be a crossover between the Phoenix Cruiser and a traditional camper van-size RV.
The TRX is built on the Ford Transit chassis with sleeping for 2, plus a full kitchen and bathroom with premium appointments and features. The TRX is available with either gas or diesel engines and could be a great introduction to full-time RVing for a couple new to downsizing.
